What is Coherence: When Positive Thinking is NOT Enough

I am sure by now you have heard the benefits of positive thinking. In fact- my resent studies in neuroscience have shown me the true power of our mind.

I wrote before about how thoughts impact our health and body,and how we become what we visualize.

To Review:

Neuroplasticity is a new scientific discovery proving that we can literally change our brains  through our thoughts and choices. We can physically create new neural pathways and destroy old ones. We can wire out toxic beliefs, experiences, and thinking patterns and wire in truths, good habits, and outstanding thinking patterns.

Emotion + Thoughts

It is not just the thought alone that changes the body and brain, it is the EMOTION that goes with it.

This is where most people get it wrong. They try to begin thinking positive- but they are still FEELING worry, fear, anxiety, shame, etc. This causes CHAOS within the body because mind and emotions are not in line.

THE KEY TO KNOW: True healing and change in the body begin to happen when emotions align with your positive thoughts. This is where coherence comes in.

Learn to get into a state of Coherence!

Coherence is when thoughts + emotions align. When this happens, amazing things begin to happen in your body! For example, when thinking about something you are grateful for, and you truly feel gratitude- your body is in a peak healing and performing state.

Most scientists and researchers today are fascinated with a body state called coherence.  All the research shows that the more you can experience coherence, the more your body heals, repairs, and changes for the better.

What is it? Coherence is a state in which all of the body’s systems work together in harmony. In states of  coherence, there is increased synchronization and harmony between the cognitive, emotional and physiological systems, resulting in efficient and harmonious functioning of the whole body.
In other words, it is when you mind and body come into alignment…..so  your thoughts (which are your mind) align with your emotions (which is your body).
Most of the time we are NOT in a coherent state- when we are worried, angry, jealous, bitter, etc- our body cannot move into this healing state.

Why does this matter? Simply put, the more you can be in a state of coherence, the healthier, happier, and more compassionate you will be.

Generate Your Own Emotions

This can become tricky, when you really don’t FEEL positive, how can you generate it? The answer is visualization. No matter what you are feeling, you can always imagine how you DO want to feel, and when you imagine feeling and acting how you desire, you brain and body begin to change as if you actually were feeling that emotion. You DO NOT need to have a positive experience to generate a positive emotion.

Key Take Away and Action Steps

It is not enough just to think positive, you also have to FEEL the emotion of that thought for change to happen.

  1. Think and feel about what you are grateful for. Truly let that feeling of gratitude radiate through your body.
  2. Think about a place, person, pet, or experience that brings you true joy- let that feeling radiate your body.
  3. If you cannot think of anything you love or are grateful for in the moment- visualize and imagine how you do want to feel, what you do want your life to look like, what you do want your body and health to look like- and imagine how that would feel if it happened.

All of these emotions will put you into a coherate state- which transforms the body and mind.
Let me tell you, nothing has made such a noticeable impact on my heath. Your thoughts literally change your body.
