There are so many excellent resources for feeding baby nutrient dense foods so I am not going to go into the nutritional needs and what to avoid, but I wanted to give an overview of how we went about it with our daughter.
A few of my favorite resources include:
- Super Nutrition for Babies – this book is my go to resource! It provides step by step guidelines of which foods to introduce, when, and why. Plus it gives you a great outline to follow with recipes. Each month you will know exactly what to do.
- Nourishing Traditions – a staple to have in the house. Full of recipes and information on nutrient dense cooking and homemaking.
I held off on any solid foods until she was 6 months old in order to give her digestive system time to mature.
We chose to give our daughter nutrient-focused whole foods including healthy fats, quality meats, and vegetables. We did not give her teething biscuits, cereal or sugary fruits as refined foods and grains have much less nutrition and can irritate your baby’s digestive tract.
First Foods: 6-8 Months
We did a combo of baby led weaning and purees. I honestly did more purres because I felt like I could add so much to it to fill her nutritional needs because let’s be honest, not much made it into her mouth when she feeds herself. Plus it was so much less of a mess!
- Bone Broth: The first ‘food’ we gave her was bone broth. I did this for 2 weeks before giving her first solid foods to prepare and strengthen her digestive track. I just spoon fed it to her or she actually drank it great out of a coffee cup.
- Avocado: The first solid food was avocado. Simply mashed and fed with a spoon.
- Liver: To feed her liver, I used this freeze dried liver powder and just mixed it with breast milk into a paste or added into sweet potato or avocado.
- Banana: I always mashed the banana and added some breast milk and probiotic to it.
- Sweet Potato/Squashes: I roast these in the oven mash them with coconut oil or ghee.
- Carrots: steam and mashed with healthy fat
- Blended meats: beef, lamb, turkey
- Healthy fats: coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, ghee
First foods: 8-10 Months
- Soft boiled egg yolk
- Zucchini: steamed and mashed with healthy fat
- Beets: steamed and mashed with healthy fat.
- Coconut cream/milk
- Homemade gelatin gummies
- Sardines and salmon
- Fish roe
- Bone marrow
First Foods: 10-12 Months
- Steamed greens with healthy fat
- Broccoli and cauliflower
- Fermented foods
Baby Food on the Go
Although making fresh food for baby each day is the best choice, there are MANY days when I simply do not have time or we are traveling.
I searched every health food store for a good source of premade baby food and had the hardest time finding anything I would actually give to my daughter.
The problem with most baby food:
- They are made of pure fruit. I am not a fan of giving her a large amount of pure fruit without any healthy fat added in to slow the absorption and stabilize the sugar.
- They contain grains and dairy: I also do not plan on giving her any grains until at least 18 months when she can fully digest and process them. Pasteurized dairy is also a problem for many babies.
