Nourishing DIY Tallow Cream

Nourishing DIY Tallow Cream

By accident, I discovered my new favorite moisturizer.

I had a few jars of organic tallow (yes, tallow is animal fat) leftover that I have never used before. We were out of lotion, and my daughter really needed some relief for her dry skin.

Coconut, avocado, jojoba, and argon are wonderful, and are the only moisturizers I use on my skin but they do not even touch being effective in moisturizing my daughters super dry, itchy skin.

So, I rubbed some tallow on her and the results blew my mind.

Benefits of DIY Tallow Cream

Once you get over the fact of what it is(;)), what it does to your skin is incredible.

  • Tallow is uniquely compatible to our skins own biology
  • It’s rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K along with a saturated fat ratio that closely resembles what our cells use to maintain the integrity
  • It absorbs easily without leaving a greasy residue behind
  • It’s extremely hypoallergenic and can be used on the very sensitive skin
  • Helps rebuild the barrier function of the skin
  • Soothes eczema and extremely dry skin

Tallow and Eczema

My daughter has had some extremely dry, itchy, itchy skin. I have been trying everything to heal it from red vs. blue light therapy, to zeolite, to RESTORE, and everything in between.

In desperation, I tried allllll the lotions you can find that have been said to help eczema from natural to not natural at all. Honestly, none of them worked and always left me disappointed.

Making this tallow cream is by far the most effective lotion I have used that has helped her skin. Especially if I apply it 2-3 times a day, her skin turns so soft, smooth, and itch free!

Instead of spending $$$ on lotions (which I would have to help her) I now make this and it works better than anything I have tried.

Why I love Making my Own Skin Care

As an Esthetician, I am a skincare junkie. I love trying out the newest products for glowing skin.

Even with constantly trying out new (pricey) products, I keep coming back to products I make on my own because (surprisingly) I find they are far more effective!

Oils and Essential Oils are skin transformers. So nutrient rich and full of antioxidants that promote glowing skin. I like making my own products because I infuse them with oils and essential oils in therapeutic doses that my skin thrives on.

I keep it stupid simple.

  1. I wash my face either with the oil cleansing method, dr. bronners, or some other wash I am experimenting with.
  2. I tone with apple cider vinegar mixture
  3. I moisturize with:
    1. My DIY serum with argan oil, jojoba oil, and essential oils.
    2. Emu oil
    3. This tallow cream when I really feel dry and want deep moisture, I love how it makes my skin feel!

Give your fancy skin care a break and try these out!

The Magic of Essential Oils

Essential oils are often referred to as the “lifeblood” of plants. They are the concentrated oils of herbs, plants and trees.

Essential oils are composed of very small molecules that can penetrate your cells, and some compounds in essential oils can even cross the blood-brain barrier.

For anti-aging, skin enhancing, smoothing, and evening effects, essential oils are so powerful.

Frankincense, lavender, are my favorites.

The main reason I think this tallow cream has been helping my daughters skin is that I have been putting frankincense and lavender in it.

One small, 15mL bottle of lemon essential oil can contain up to 45 lemons!

How to Make DIY Tallow Cream

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup melted tallow
  • 2 tablespoons oil (argon, jojoba, olive, emu, avocado, coconut)
  • 27 drops essential oil for face application
  • If you’re making this balm for babies under two, use up to 8 drops of a child-safe essential oil.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Melt the tallow gently over low heat
  • Pour into a large bowl and mix in the oil and essential oils
  • Pour into jar and allow to cool
  • OPTIONAL: You can whip with a hand mixer until it looks like frosting. Whipping gives it a lighter consistency that makes application easier, but I honestly never do this.

VARIATIONS

  • You can add 2-4 tablespoons of shea butter
  • Experiment with different oils every time you make it to see what your skin likes best (argon, jojoba, olive, emu, avocado, coconut)

I am curious with this DIY Tallow Cream, how many drops of EO’s do you recommend for the body? Is it the same as facial?
