How to Heal Acne Naturally

Acne is close to my heart. For years I struggled with terrible, cystic, embarrassing acne. I tried anything and everything with no luck. After diving into functional nutrition and energy biology, my skin transformed.\

As an Esthetician, one of the most common cases people come to me for is acne.

When starting a treatment protocol to heal acne naturally, I start by investigating the root cause. There are four areas I examine when treating an acne case.

How to Heal Acne Naturally

Diet

I have found that nothing changes your skin faster or more effective than treating it from the inside out first.

What you eat has a direct impact on the quality of your skin. Food sensitivities and foods like vegetable oils, processed sugar, and processed foods create inflammation in the body leading to inflammation of the skin. Pesticides, GMOs, antibiotics and hormones contained in most foods also create toxicity in the body which can lead to an overload for the liver. When the body has more toxicity than it can handle, it often times will resort to expelling those toxins through the skin.

The first step to heal acne is to begin an anti-inflammatory, nutrient dense diet eliminating trigger foods and loading up on healing, anti-oxidant rich ones.

For three weeks I will have clients eliminate dairy, sugar, gluten, vegetable oils, and non-organic animal products. I have them focus on healthy fats, organic vegetables and greens, organic animal protein, low-glycemic fruits, and sprouted nuts and seeds.

Gut

The health of your gut can be directly reflected by the health of your skin. Intestinal permeability (or leaky gut) is when you have small holes in your digestive track which let out undigested food particles and toxins into the bloodstream. The body then reacts to these invaders often times creating inflammation and skin eruptions.

Bacterial dysbiosis is also a major contributing factor of ance. Gut infections such as SIBO, candida, fungal, and parasites can take over causing there to be more bad bacteria than good.

Along with a healing diet that limits sugar, I also like to add gut and liver support in the forms of bone broth, Milk Thistle (Silymarin Marianum), Aloe Vera , and  L-Glutamine .

Hormones

This is where I see most acne stemming from.

Hormonal acne is on the rise and becoming all too common, but it doesn’t have to be. Many hormonal imbalances occur because of diet, gut, and liver issues. Adjusting diet and adding in key supplements to aid detoxification, support the adrenals, and calm the nervous system help tremendously.

Hormones are also highly affected by your daily mental and emotional state. Feelings of anxiety, stress, anger, and overwhelm cause your adrenals to create high amounts of cortisol which then throw your sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone) off balance.

Following a healing diet, managing your daily mental and emotional states, adding in the gut supplements, as well as cod liver oil, Liquid Magnesium, a Trace Minerals, and B Complex  will begin to support and bring the endocrine system back in balance.

Skin Care

Once diet, hormones, gut, and liver are taken care of, then I look at what they are doing topically. One of the biggest problems I see is people doing too much to their skin, causing further redness, inflammation, and breakouts.

I encourage my clients to use a natural cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, spot treating with bentonite clay and essential oils and applying nourishing masks and exfoliation methods only a few times a week.

I have found these essencail oils to be my most effctive tool for treating acne from the outside in (after treating the inside out).
